Calvin Klein

Calvin Klein, an American fashion designer, was born in the Bronx, New York. Klein’s Jewish-Hungarian parents gave him his birth name, Richard Klein. Calvin grew up in New York and attended the High School of Industrial Art and Design, where he received his initial fashion instruction. Then he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology, with a degree in fashion design, at the age of 20.

After being Dan Millstein’s assistant for two years, Calvin Klein became an independent designer, creating fashion in New York. Klein, together with a long time friend Barry Schwartz, opened his own company in 1968. Barry managed the business aspect and Calvin designed. Calvin Klein experienced success early in his business venture due to the guidance of Baron de Gunzburg, a very famous fashion editor. Calvin Klein’s firm also gained recognition when Bonwit Teiler placed a large order of his newly designed garments, getting the attention of the fashion world.
