Walt Elias Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 5th, 1901. His father, an Irish-Canadian and his mother German-American had five children; Walter had 3 brothers and a sister. Disney grew up in Marceline Missouri where at the early age of 7, he made sketches and drawings and sold them to his neighbors.
Walt Disney always had an interest in drawing. As a teenager, his family moved back to Illinois where he attended McKinley High School. He became involved with the school newspaper and contributed with his cartoons and photography. Walt also took night courses at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1918, he dropped out of high school to join the army, but because he was only 16, he was rejected. He then joined the Red Cross, where he drove an ambulance for a year.
Disney moved to Kansas City where he began experimenting with animations. After a short failure with a business venture, Walt moved to California, and together with his brother Roy, saved enough money to set up his very first Hollywood cartoon studio in his uncle’s garage. This was the beginning of what became 43 years of a successful Hollywood career. The creator of many American icons, including our beloved Mickey Mouse, and numerous timeless animated films, Walt Disney continues to be part of every kid’s entertainment life and imagination.
