What Is Perfume?
Wikipedia defines perfume, "a mixture of fragrant essential oils and aroma compounds, a fixative, and alcohol used to give parts of the human body and sometimes other objects a long-lasting and pleasant smell."
The word perfume comes from the Latin "per fumum" which means "through smoke." It is the purest and most expensive.
Parfum
Parfum is the French word for perfume. Eau de parfum literally translates to “water of perfume” or “perfumed water.”
If you are looking for a fragrance that is not as strong or expensive, you should explore the parfums on the market.
Fragrance research shows that about 70% of the scent associated with a parfum will wear off after several hours but the remaining scent can last up to 24 hours.

Eau De Toilette
Eau de toilette is a perfume solution used as a skin freshener. This is a lighter more delicate fragrance scent and is perfect for everyday use.
Normally eau de toilette is less expensive than eau de parfum, and lasts for 2 to 4 hours.
Eau De Fraiche
Eau de fraiche is French for “fresh water”. It is the lightest, most diluted version of a fragrance, therefore the cheapest. Perfect for a touch up with your favorite scent.
Consider getting a scent in a more affordable version, if you are on a tight budget… body lotion, body cream, bath and shower gels or a deodorant!
Perfume Strength
Order from strongest to weakest:
- Perfume - richest and longest-lasting product of a fragrance line with 20-40% aromatic compounds.
- Parfum - containing between 10-30% aromatic compounds, making it the second strongest fragrance.
- Eau de Toilette - a perfume solution with a 3-8% aromatic compound in an oil and water base.
- Eau de Fraiche has the lowest concentration with 1-3% essential oils.
