'Clean' is used a lot when describing colognes. Gendarme isn't the herbal clean of Irish Spring soap, nor the amber clean of Dial Gold bar. Rather, it's the very essence of 'clean' one gets with pure white cotton lifted straight from the dryer. The light, airy mix of jasmine, verbena and leather is exquisite. Like capturing a perfect, sunlit spring day in a bottle! Amazing stuff! On the other hand, if you prefer earthy, herbal scents like patchouli, vetyver, pine, and the like, Gendarme will probably come across as far 'too clean.' I happen to like any well-made cologne along a broad spectrum, but when the situation calls for fresh, white-linen clean, Gendarme is hard to top!

I was first introduced to this cologne by a male clerk in [...] Man's Fragrance Department and have gone back for more by popular request. It is one of the best gifts I can give my son and two grandsons. They all love it, and so do the females in their lives. My mother always said you shouldn't be able to smell a person's perfume unless you are close enough to hug them. Gendrame fits that bill; it is both subtle and masculine. I hate colognes you can smell sometimes even before its wearer enters the room. That is so tacky! That is so NOT Gendarme!

I have used Gendarme since 1996, and have only received positive comments from both sexes, but especially from the women. I think it is the very clean fragrance that they love, more than anything else. It is not too strong, as others need to get close before they can smell it. However, it needs to be reapplied every 4 hours or the only ones who can smell it are those hugging you.

I've been using this cologne since it was introduced to the public. It was created for people who have sensitive reactions to many of the expensive name brand acrid products on the market today. I was taught if you can smell the cologne on you during the day, your putting on too much...I have always received compliments, even from complete strangers, on how great this cologne smells. One last comment, I went into a famous fragrance chain and sprayed Gendarme on one of their paper tester strips and it smelled terrible so my suggestion is don't rely on those test strips for the true fragrance scent, spray some on your wrist and wait a few moments.

Even if this sort of thing normally bores you, this is a freshness concealing much depth beneath its well-scrubbed, laundry-caught-in-a-breeze veil. Ever dream of doing the wash not in a chemical-choked basement but atop a high-rise overlooking a beautiful park brimming with flowers and greenery? Or walking around with bars of high-quality soap in your pockets without the awkward appearance, extra weight and slippery feeling on your hands from reaching in from time to time? Even if you haven't, the fact that a fragrance can conjure such vivid images is a testament to its power.

At the risk of dissuading some from this fine product, I would suggest forgetting the "cologne for men" bit on the front of the box. It’s much longer lasting than any mere cologne and ANYONE can (and should) wear this to sustain a just-showered, still-smelling-faintly-of-fine-soap feeling.

Neither macho-man nor girly-girl, it occupies its own highly unique space on the scent spectrum - pleasant sans cliches or preconceived notions. And as I understand, it can be worn by those with perfume allergies or disorders such as asthma, for whom scent was largely an irritant and rarely the joyous vehicle for silently expressing one's mood that it should be. Remarakable indeed.
