I never smelled the original, and everyone's said that this has changed, but it is still an amazingly balanced scent that I believe works on both women and men (though it smells differently on each). It begins with a kind of clean, citrusy, with a little bit of spice scent, and then deepens with mossy, cedar, and even tobacco. It is never overpowering, and you can spray a lot on without overwhelming anyone. It's my current go-to fragrance, especially in this hot weather.

BIG mistake... Smells like he turns 60. Not sexy, very "daddy" or "granpa".

I think it has nothing special and way to expensive for OFF.
I suggest you check out other great fragrances like Gucci Pour Homme 2.

I have used this product since 1972 and still love it as many others who compliment me. It seems to work especially well with my body chemistry. I have tried other scents, but always come back to Vetiver de Guerlain and it never disappoints. I still have one bottle of the original Vetiver and use it occasionally. I'm not sure which I like better. The difference is very slight. The new bottle looks more interesting, but the old bottle fits the hand more easily.

Just got in from a snowy night in Jersey from Bloomies in Pa. I was on a mission I'm really in to scents. I have taken it seriously and scientifically. Have ordered a set of esential scents included. Have to learn the scent industry and history over night; figutorly speaking. Reducated have the staff on what I had learned and being the salesman in me gave them better peaks of interest to persue with customers. Tested about 300 Fragrances in 4 hours; a long night.
Anyway, have used the stuff for a short while; it's all and more of what you've read I got compliments from the Guerlain store asking me what I was wearing..... Hmmmm.Its a lovely. balanced scent that lasts. For wear daytime,night, anytime at all. Not the best on application but give it 10 min. and it develops for up to 15 hours. Getting better and more complex. As far as the notes are concerned same as the presentation lit.
It's JUST GOOD SUFF. By the way it's the fragrance that is used exclusively by Paul McCartney, Michael Caine, Arnold The actor and Cal.Gov; Haarrison Ford, Andia Garcia, Peter Sellers, Jodie Foster and Naomi Cambell. Good Company. Ciao

Carven Vetiver rubs shoulders with other great vetiver scents such as Guerlain and Creed . You just can't go wrong with this.I first got drawn to this by the aftershave that was gifted to me some fifteen years back. I have not looked back ever since. The dry down is superb and everything a classic scent should be : delicate, subtle ,understated and unmistakably reassuring.

A most delightful fragrance, Vetiver still holds its own despite being a good forty-seven years old.

It's not for those looking to just splash something "nice-smelling," but it's an adventure filled with a strong top note of lemon/mandarin, a surprisingly resilient mid note of Tobacco, and a flourish of a finish with a powerful suggestion of spiciness (pepper, tonka bean and such).

The first hit will bring out the tobacco, which will go into hiding immediately having been overpowered by the citrusy elements, but will peek out soon after and stay up for at least a few hours before the spicy stuff makes itself available for the long kiss goodnight.

Perfectly woody/earthy with enough "muskiness" and "smokiness" to turn you into that "mysterious yet/and warm stranger," this hits the right notes (pun intended) every time.

Recommendation: Evening wear, but equally suited for the office.

A must in every thinking man's collection.

It's exactly as advertised. Smells nice. Doesn't last more than, say, 6 hours or so, but what do you want? It's not magic.

The sprayer is a little tricky to aim. Sometimes I miss my wrist from 3 inches away.

Wow! I smelled another "Vetiver" scent elsewhere I really really liked, so did some research, saw Guerlain was considered the best Vetiver, and bought it blind.

LOVE IT. Easily one of the best scents I've encountered. Very versatile for office/casual style wear, and right in the category where I'd say it smells like a premium soap (but not "soapy") and isn't obvious cologne.

Wouldn't put it in the romantic/sensual category normally, but perfect for everything else. Easily one of my favorite men's scents of all time. Don't foresee readily tiring of it, either. Don't buy it -- I want to keep this all to myself. :)

One of the best fragrances that has lasted many years. I would classify this as a more summer perfume need to be worn in hot summer days. It has a quick die down (on me at least) so doesnt last too long in winter. Can never go wrong with Vetiver, absolute classic (and no it does NOT smell like grandpa!)

After reading lots of great things about this fragrance, and trying a decant of Creed's Original Vetiver, I decided to try this fragrance. Initial impression was not too bad but after a while I came to the conclusion that the base fragrance, vetiver grass (I assume) is not to my liking. Others may love it but it's not my cup of tea.

This cologne has been around since the 50's and I read a review of it on a web site thats why I bought it. It is a very mellow scent with undertones of citrus and mint in my opinion. It comes in a nicely designed bottle that resembles Sean John "Unforgiveable" or vice versa. Bottom line it's different scent, fresh and clean not overpowering and absolutely classic. This is my favorite scent for my husband to wear. It's clean and distinctive and long-lasting. Even if he applies it with a heavy hand, it's never overpowering. There's no off-putting note and it always invites me to draw near. An added bonus is that few other men wear it -- I absolutely love it.

A great fragerence is for anytime, and this one cirtainly is. There is much noise about the original version being better. Not true! The older bottles are quite faded. The intense citrus top-note may put some off, but it turns more on. In 20 minutes the topnote fades, yet helps to potentiate the exquisite interplay of cedar and vetiver in the mid-note. The signature Guerlain bass-note is masculine yet never heavy. The women in my household are always stealing my Vetiver for themselves! Try it, you'll like it!
