4711 is best used as an after-bath splash although it can be re-applied for a fresh feel during the day. It can be used liberally for an all-over fragrance effect. It's not too strong so it can used for work or any activity - but strong enough to give a signature scent. The trade-off is that it doesn't last all day.

The value is great. I've bought this in a small quantity in the city of Koln (Cologne), Germany where it originated and is still made today. The price is probably 10 times as much as the price of these large bottles available from Scentiments.

I bought this after trying the 3 oz. after shave. The EDC seems identical or at leasr very similar to the AS, and is a lot cheaper per ounce. I love this product because I am not a fan of overpowering, long-lasting as or colognes. I have in my rotation Tabac, Speick, Alt-Innsbruck and 4711. All German products. To me, the Germans are doing something right! I often use the 4711 in combination with Speick or Alt-Innsbruck. Because it is so refreshing and light, I also use it as a "freshen-up" during the day or evening. Great product! Now if I can only figure out how to deacant from that large 27 oz bottle to the 3 oz AS bottle!

This scent goes on easily and dries instantly. It feels fresh on contact, although it carries the burn of high alcohol content. During the day, to freshen up, its citrus scent is fresher than a lemon zest in a drink, and feels light and tropical. It also does the job of closing my pores, freshening to a point upon later moistening, and bracing the skin.

Unless you are "allergic" to products bearing German name or origin (and some of us are - I understand there are people who cannot own/drive/sit in a Mercedes, no matter how good it was or is) this is one the greatest bargains (the 27.1 oz size) around. It is not overpowering, it is not long lasting, although I wish it were, longer lasting, that is. Simply stated is a classic that touches days gone by. Use it as an after-shave, as a deodorant, a disfectant or whatever you think cologne is for. Although it is termed uni-sex, I think of it as more appealing to men than women.

I bought this as a gift for my mother. Being a native German, she has used it all her life and has a hard time finding it in the United States. I first came across this fragrance in Sydney, Australia when I was with the U.S. Marine Corps. I liked it so much I sent it to my father and brother. That was in 1967. Since then, I have recommended it to my special friends and given it as a gift many times.

first found 4711 on a lufthansa flight in the 70's
then each time was in germany would buy some to bring home. for many years didnt travel overseas so didnt have any 4711.last month found an old lufthansa toiletries pouch and inside found a small bottle of 4711.decided to try the internet .

If you saw that hilarious movie in which Windex was used for just about everything, then you will understand this: "4711" is thought of much the same way in my household! Of course there are exceptions. "4711" is a light, fresh, brisk and versatile fragrance that smells clean! It lifts our spirits, on grey days. It cools us off on hot days, improves our demeanor when dabbed on a hanky when a cold is imminent. For minor cuts, it acts as an antiseptic. I can go on and on...I would like to purchase a bottle for each sibling's household! The fact that 4711 is not a long lasting fragrance is indeed a plus. The smell doesn't hang on or deteriorate. I saw that this was considered a unisex fragrance. Because I love wearing both citrus and woody fragrances, and seeing that it had such a great price, I snatched it up. I opened the bottle and smelled...a man's fragrance. Not unisex to me. There's also an underlying soap smell that I don't like and prevents me from using as linen spray.

It does, however, smell nice on my husband - the warm woody components really come out and the soapy smell goes away. Not much citrus scent on either of us (the citrus description was the main reason I purchased it, and the over-subtlness of it is why I can't recommend it).
