I splash this excellent cologne on my face as an after shave in the morning, and as a refresher later in the day. It wakes up my face and makes me think of being back in Florida, driving north on US 27 toward the winery, looking at the rolling hills that were the Central Florida citrus groves visible from the Bok Tower and the Interstate for miles around...My daughter asked me for a bottle for herself to dab behind her ears, and I was pleased to know that the fragrance had broader appeal than just my use of this excellent value for the money... and effect!

When I was a child (over 80 years ago)my Father always smelled fresh. He used 4711 every day. He would splash some on his face and hankerchief. Given that this scent is an eau de cologne--the original, I might add--it doesn't pack the punch of a perfume (22% of essential oils vs the 4% in an eau de cologne). But I find this a plus in our increasingly allergen-sensitive culture. This is a wonderful item to splash on as a freshener--in lieu of bathing, when time is of the essence. It's subtle enough to satisfy the "arms length" rule of scent etiquette, and enticing enough to prompt a "mmmm, you smell wonderful!" when receiving a hug. The biggest bottle lasts me a year. Of course I have a portable atomizer for "pick-me ups" during the day.

My earliest scent memories, from when I was very, very young,
involve this beautifully crisp classic cologne.

4711 makes a wonderfully refreshing splash which will cool you down
on even the hottest and most humid of days. If you live where it
is unbearably hot and sticky, try refrigerating this for an instant
drop in temperature - apply to wrists, neck, nape of neck, and other
pulse points for a quick dose of cool.

Although this is a cologne and naturally very light, I find that the scent
lingers throughout the day, although it remains subtle and stays
very,very close to the body. I love that, actually. On clothing,
the scent remains true, fresh, and lovely, even lingering overnight.

A Cuban friend once told me that 4711 is considered a man's scent there,
but to me, this is fresh, pure, and very feminine, without being in the least bit cloying.

Occasionally I will pour a little bit out into a shot glass
and set it out to perfume a room. It does so beautifully, and seems to
add an air of clarity and cleanliness to the environment. In this,
I feel it has rather a spiritual effect.

I have also combined 4711 with orange flower and rose hydrosols
for a beautifully perfumed effect. I once wore this combination while
meeting with a woman who was pregnant and nauseated by every scent
in creation. Inhaling deeply, she asked what I was wearing, and told me
that it was the only scent she had encountered in months that
she had found beautiful rather than sickening. So, I feel that 4711 would
be a good choice for those in healthcare, etc., who are dealing
with people who may be very sensitive to heavier perfumes.

The original eau de cologne from Germany. It was first received as a gift when I was a child. I introduced it to my spouse and it is the only after shave or scent he has used for almost 40 years. I use mine as a spray in the morning and again before bed. After nearly 50 years of trying other scents, this is still the best.
I do wish the scent would last a little longer with out getting stronger.

4711 is best used as an after-bath splash although it can be re-applied for a fresh feel during the day. It can be used liberally for an all-over fragrance effect. It's not too strong so it can used for work or any activity - but strong enough to give a signature scent. The trade-off is that it doesn't last all day.

The value is great. I've bought this in a small quantity in the city of Koln (Cologne), Germany where it originated and is still made today. The price is probably 10 times as much as the price of these large bottles available from Scentiments.

I bought this after trying the 3 oz. after shave. The EDC seems identical or at leasr very similar to the AS, and is a lot cheaper per ounce. I love this product because I am not a fan of overpowering, long-lasting as or colognes. I have in my rotation Tabac, Speick, Alt-Innsbruck and 4711. All German products. To me, the Germans are doing something right! I often use the 4711 in combination with Speick or Alt-Innsbruck. Because it is so refreshing and light, I also use it as a "freshen-up" during the day or evening. Great product! Now if I can only figure out how to deacant from that large 27 oz bottle to the 3 oz AS bottle!

This scent goes on easily and dries instantly. It feels fresh on contact, although it carries the burn of high alcohol content. During the day, to freshen up, its citrus scent is fresher than a lemon zest in a drink, and feels light and tropical. It also does the job of closing my pores, freshening to a point upon later moistening, and bracing the skin.

Unless you are "allergic" to products bearing German name or origin (and some of us are - I understand there are people who cannot own/drive/sit in a Mercedes, no matter how good it was or is) this is one the greatest bargains (the 27.1 oz size) around. It is not overpowering, it is not long lasting, although I wish it were, longer lasting, that is. Simply stated is a classic that touches days gone by. Use it as an after-shave, as a deodorant, a disfectant or whatever you think cologne is for. Although it is termed uni-sex, I think of it as more appealing to men than women.

I have been using 4711 cologne for almost 50 years and can't imaging not using it every morning, every evening and after every shower. The fragrence is long-lasting but not intimidating or cloying. I prefer to use 4711 cologne at bedtime. It has a fresh, clean, citrus smell. It is not overpowering. While is lasts a relatively short time, I think it is an incredible scent, and strongly recommend it, particularly as a late evening product.

I bought this as a gift for my mother. Being a native German, she has used it all her life and has a hard time finding it in the United States. I've always been aware of the pleasant light scent that doesn't overpower, and how good it feels to rub some on your temples on a hot day, but I was shocked by the size of the bottle for the price! I was expecting what would normally be a large bottle of perfume, maybe 4 inches high. What I received was more like a wine bottle! Can't beat the value, and this was the best price I found on the internet.

I first came across this fragrance in Sydney, Australia when I was with the U.S. Marine Corps. I liked it so much I sent it to my father and brother. That was in 1967. Since then, I have recommended it to my special friends and given it as a gift many times.
My two sons speak of it as "an olds mans cologne"...but now they use it too...
It was just this year that I became aquainted with its history and discovered that it is a mans (and a womans) cologne and its very old...
George Washington using it in the 1790's and all...

I saw that this was considered a unisex fragrance. Because I love wearing both citrus and woody fragrances, and seeing that it had such a great price, I snatched it up. I opened the bottle and smelled...a man's fragrance. Not unisex to me. There's also an underlying soap smell that I don't like and prevents me from using as linen spray.

It does, however, smell nice on my husband - the warm woody components really come out and the soapy smell goes away. Not much citrus scent on either of us (the citrus description was the main reason I purchased it, and the over-subtlness of it is why I can't recommend it).
